Last year saw some bills introduced to the Whitehouse which could lead to the VA establishing a program which aims to prevent veteran’s suicide across the entire country and also create free access for any veteran seeking mental health care services.

If this is passed and signed into law by President Biden, a pilot program called Zero Suicide Initiative would become a way to improve the safety and suicide care for veterans which would “significantly” reduce the rate of veteran’s suicide as stated by the wording of the bill.

The VFW located at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, while hoping for the passage of said bill, isn’t waiting for Washington to enact on this very serious matter. We established our Veterans Combat Trauma Support Group and are reaching out to other Posts and Legions in the area to join us in setting up this worthy program.

Even though the group’s main purpose is to assist Veterans, we welcome all First Responders to join. There are many activities, dinners, discussions and we are looking to enlarge our curriculum as the availability arises. The meetings all start out with the Pledge of Allegiance and we not only have our Chaplain present, there is also a VA service officer around to help with the filing of claims. Anyone who has had to file a claim with the government can appreciate the help a knowledgeable service officer can offer!

It is a known fact that our area has a large influx of veterans and there are many of them who need assistance from time to time. Since they responded to our needs without a second thought, we should be working to continue to serve them in any way which we are able. It is not a duty: rather it is a privilege and honor to find ways to thank them for their service.
