VFW: Times a changing!
The VFW Auxiliary magazine which is been in existence for 81 years is now going digital beginning with the January 2023 issue. Like so many other publications, it has been considered a big savings in their budgets. It will also save on paper, garbage and drivers to disperse the materials. The downside of such a move is the fact so many of us are used to reading our papers or magazines while drinking our coffee at the table in the morning before starting our day. Also, we like to feel the pages in our hands, controlling what we are actually reading instead of having to scroll through lines of type to find something of interest to us. Many of us are still not that attached to the current technology.
Not only is it to save money that digital is becoming the new norm, organizations such as the VFW and Legion are pushing to recruit new members and the younger generation of today feels naked if they don’t have a phone or I-pad hanging from their dominant hand! In an effort to keep the status quo, recruitment must be met with a much bigger push because so many of our members are getting up in years and can no longer do as much for the community as they did in the past.
But, even though the times are a changing, we here at the VFW Post 4174 are still working continuously to fulfill our promises to our members and the community. Not only have we been collecting foods, goods and other staples for those hit hardest by hurricane Ian, we are already working on the Christmas toys for children program. In our post, we have 2 huge boxes waiting for anyone and everyone to donate unwrapped toys and the deadline for this worthy venture is December 15th. Right now, Walmart and Target, not to mention the Dollar General all have special sales going on for many of these items which would delight any child’s heart.
Volunteering is the lifeblood of any organization and the feelings of worth and satisfaction for doing so can’t be measured in mere words. We are always in need of volunteers for the many different projects we support, and are proud of the way so many of our members manage to find the time to step up, but there is always so much more to be done.
If you’re looking for new worthwhile ventures for the coming year, why not join us at the VFW Post 4174 located at 25 S. Homestead Road. You’ll be glad you did!
