VFW: MOVEing moments!
It’s hard to believe that 17 years ago the VA launched a MOVE Weight Management Program which has helped thousands of veterans attain a fitness and weight loss goal. The participants have been sharing their success stories on the MOVE web page which is located at www.move.va.gov/MOVE.
The MOVE team at a VA medical center focuses on building healthier eating habits and establishing a physical activity routine. It also incorporates discipline as well as accountability. Many of the veterans declare they take advantage of the program’s tools to help track food portions as well as the actual quality of items that sit on a plate.
Another big help in reaching a goal is the VA issued Fitbit aids helps in the meet activity goals. Progression from only walking a short distance to walking several miles is one of the more frequent accomplishments often mentioned. The program is free to any veteran receiving care in the VA, although all veterans are able to visit the website and use its downloading resources.
Some of the resources are informational modules, worksheets, food and movement logs, physical exertion guides and of course a calorie content chart. There is a questionnaire on the website which can be taken by anyone wanting to get an individual report with a recommendation of resources.
Since this is the start of a new year, and many of us make a resolution to do something about our weight and sore bodies, checking out this website might be the MOVEment needed to begin working on a fitness goal. It might even be easier to begin and stick to the program if the entire Post would think about instituting such a venture as part of the regular activities!
If this interests you, why not call the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres and ask if anyone is interested in starting a healthy, happy regimen. The phone number is 239-369-5100, and calling might just be the catalyst needed to get the ball rolling. You’ll be glad you did!
