VFW: Dated days

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Feb 21, 2023

Much of our lives are ruled by a calendar. We have to remember when to pay our bills, the anniversary of some special event in the family, birthdays, doctor’s appointments, when is the Super Bowl, is the Daytona 500 this month or next, are we scheduled to attend a meeting this week and so many other items to keep track of every day.

But, just because we are so involved in our own affairs, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep track of some of the most memorable events which have happened in our country. Imagine, 78 years ago, marines raised a flag on Iwo Jima; the armed forces have so many different dates where they celebrate their beginnings; this year is the 20th anniversary of the war in Iraq; troops returned from Viet Nam 50 years ago; and many of our veterans who served in the Gulf War or the Korean War need to be feted also.

Since the end of World War 2, the United States has been in a state of some type of war. Our military always rises to the challenges the country asks of them, and those of us who are not veterans, should always take a moment or two out of our lives to be appreciative of our veterans and what they have done in our service.

Here, at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres, we try to go out of our way to honor our veterans and thank them for their service. The little we can do for them in no way measures up to what they have done for us and we need to be mindful of some of these very important dates. A calendar from the VFW or American Legion shows all of these historic events and is worth studying to help us remember and understand the trials and tribulations of being in the military.

If one doesn’t have a calendar, he or she can always stop in at 25 Homestead Road South to talk with our veterans and learn about these lifetime events. You’ll be glad you did!
