No, I am not talking about the basketball games which are tearing up the tv stations, nor am I referring to the races which are taking place all over the warmer spots of the country. I am not even referring to the crazy weather which has been occurring because of the climate change. I am recalling 50 years ago when troops were returning from Viet Nam and also twenty years ago when the military was at war in Iraq. Those were harrowing days for the country.

March has so many different events going on all the time. Sometimes it is just being outdoors because it’s no longer snowing or raining. It can be something as simple as beginning to see a few green sprouts, or knowing the snow has melted enough that we feel more like going out to visit friends. It is also the start of some of the craft or auto shows we have been waiting to view.

Whatever the reason for welcoming in the month, we should make an effort to visit our VFW Post 4174 to give a salute and thank you for the many veterans who are part of our membership and part of the community. No matter the month, the VFW is always working towards the goal of insuring all veterans get the benefits and respect they have so rightly earned by their service to the country.

At 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, we have many events coming up for the month of March. One of them is filling some huge boxes with non perishable food items, linens, socks, towels and other items which would benefit the homeless veterans. We are planning a huge Welcome Home Viet Nam Vets ceremony, and thinking of other ways to assist our veterans as well as the community of which we are a part. We are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with corned beef and cabbage plates along with Reubens.

We open our doors at 9 a.m. and would be more than happy to welcome new members as well as the public. Our lunches begin at 11 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. weekly, Monday through Friday. A look at the huge calendar on the wall immediately to your left as you enter, will give you an idea of all the happenings for the month.
