The month of May is fast approaching and there are some exciting events shaping up for everyone, especially those members of the VFW Post 4174! Not only is May the month we honor all mothers, but it is also the month when the famous Kentucky Derby takes place.

For Saturday, May 6, we are going all out to celebrate this fun time by having our own Kentucky Derby party. There will be a hat contest, best outfit contest and even some races. Dinner will be served and already, the ladies are whispering in corners about the decorations they are going to be putting on their hats while the men are planning on which numbered horse they are counting on to win them a few bucks!

The post is decorated with a derby motif and many of the nearby shops are out of horse themed decorations which have been adorning many of the buildings in Lehigh Acres, not just our house! We are looking forward to a fun night and the public is welcome to join us. We will have all our tv’s turned on to the actual Derby race and be able to admire all the fancy attire of the Kentuckians and their visitors from all over the country.

There is some planning for Mother’s Day, but that hasn’t quite been finalized yet, so be sure to keep reading this column for the update as soon as I have one!

While we are dedicated to our Veterans, we still like to kick up our heels at times just for fun, and May 6th is just such an occasion. But, we never lose sight of the fact our main purpose is to serve our Veterans as well as their families and our community. We are also going to be participating in District 13 elections this month.

Many of our members are heading back up north, and we wish them safe journeys and will be so glad to see them return when they do so. We will still continue with our meetings, breakfasts, lunches, dinners and Bingos during the coming months and invite you to join us. We are located at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres.
