VFW: Miles of honor

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | May 25, 2023

While driving in the state of Oregon a decade ago, a retired Army lieutenant colonel noticed not one highway in the state recognized or honored veterans. He wanted to be certain that would change. In June of 2017, the Viet Nam War veteran’s work paid off when H.B. 2100, which was a law that officially declared Oregon’s 451 mile long U.S. Highway 20 as the Oregon Medal of Honor Highway.

But, this was only the beginning . Highway 20 is the longest highway in the country, spanning from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans. He wanted this entire area to be named in honor of Medal of Honor veterans. It became a reality when Massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker, signed a bill on Nov. 17th 2022 that officially named Massachusetts U.S. Highway 20 in honor of Medal of Honor veterans. Massachusetts was the 12th and final state to officially dedicate Highway 20 for veterans who have received the nation’s highest award for valor.

The veterans of a VFW Post are continually looking for ways to give respect and honor to those who have served. While the VFW reveres all veterans, there is a special bond for those who have actually had “boots on the ground”. Naming towns, highways and counties are just a few of the many different ways to honor veterans.

Joining the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres will give veterans a chance to continue their service and be treated with the dignity and respect due them. It is also another excellent way to show honor to those who have served in our militaries. We have many different events which gives us a chance to say thanks for your service. We are open from 9 a.m. Sunday through Saturday, and have meals and games as well as entertainment along with the many community programs we sponsor.

Our membership consists of the Post, the DAV, the Riders and the Auxiliary. All of our activities are conducted with the help of many awesome volunteers and we are always looking for others to join in our many worthwhile endeavors.

Stop in at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres. You’ll be glad you did!
