VFW: Making the memory

Ah yes, the burgers, hot dogs, and brats were sizzling nicely on the grill, the potato salad and fruit salads cooling in the fridge, and the cake was sitting in its place of honor amongst all the red, white and blue decorations. While the hall was festive, it didn’t compare to the outfits worn by those who participated in the Memorial Day service at Lee Memorial Park.

But those weren’t the things which made the day a memory. It was the participation of the DAV, Chapter 94, the VFW Post 4174, VFW Auxiliary 4174, VFW Riders, American Legion Post 323, American Legion Auxiliary 323, Legion Riders, Sons of American Legion, Lehigh Acres Combat Trauma Support Group, and the K of C. The groups are all from Lehigh Acres and a member of each organization was responsible for the placing of a Memorial Wreath.

The ceremony began with a Welcome, than Invocation from the VFW Chaplain,Steve Dennison, the Flag Raising, the singing of our National Anthem by the VFW’s Kasey Denoon, the Pledge of Allegiance and opening remarks from the VFW Commander, Mike Gelhausen. Rifle Teams from Lehigh Acres Middle School and the Raiders Leadership Team showed off their skills, guest speakers from the VFW, our District 13 Commander, Shannon Rousey and Mike Mason 1st Vice Commander, from the American Legion, reminded the attendees why we were there and it was followed by a reading of the deceased Comrades and the tolling of the bell.

Finishing the day, the VFW Honor Guard did a Rifle Salute and Taps with a Benediction by the American Legion Chaplain. The program’s face had the famous quote of former President, Ronald Reagan, where he reminded us “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same”.

Memorial Day celebrations aren’t about the barbq’s or having a long weekend. The day is a reminder of what our military has fought for and to remember and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Plan to attend the Memorial Day celebrations next year. You’ll be glad you did!
