VFW: Make the switch!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Aug 24, 2023

In these dog days of summer, I’ll bet you’re tired of watching the reruns of the reruns, seeing all the commercials for all the new drugs on the market, and listening to all the warnings as to what could go wrong if you take them, and fed up of having to stay indoors because the humidity is unbearable.

Also, the fluctuation of gas prices, as well as the uprising in food costs, whether at a restaurant or in the grocery stores, is probably keeping you sitting in the recliner trying to save a buck or two. Things right now just aren’t any fun and you might be at your wits end as to how they can be changed.

There’s an easy answer to all of the above! Make The Switch! Instead of sitting in that favorite chair, watching Friends for the hundredth time, or trying to go outdoors in the sweltering heat and definitely not succumbing to the various drug ads, Make The Switch!

Here in Lehigh Acres, located at 25 S. Homestead Road, there is a quaint little Post #4174 belonging to Veterans of Foreign Wars (or the VFW as it’s more commonly known) and it opens daily at 9 a.m. In this Post, not only is the air conditioning always blowing, there is a host of activities going on every day. If you haven’t been there, yet, let me tell you all the different things you could be doing.

Sunday mornings, a great, reasonable breakfast is served and the Public is welcome, as it is at all our meals and events. Monday we have lunch from 11 a.m. til 2 p.m. and the evening hosts a Show Me the Money Bingo game. Tuesdays are always set aside for the meetings of the members. Wednesdays are our Wacky Days with lunches and dinners along with entertainment. Those of you who like to dance are more than welcome to “cut a rug” anytime! Thursdays are for regular Bingo, Fridays have dinner along with more entertainment and Saturdays not only have dinners, but there is always another special event happening. Twice a month on Saturday is the famous Hillbilly Bingo. Don’t forget to note that lunches are served Monday through Friday.

If you need a spot for some special ceremony or celebration of life, talking to any officer will get you the information needed to have us help you out with the space. We have many veterans here who are always available to talk to you about any special needs you might have too.

If you’re interested in the proper folding, displaying or getting rid of a flag, any of our veterans can assist you with this. Or, if you want to try something different than the usual mundane activities, become a member and volunteer to help serve the community. It’s a great feeling to Make The Switch from the same ole rut you might be in and help!

There are many opportunities to assist not only our Veterans and families, but also the community where we are located. Our Auxiliary alone hosts 14 different committees all year long. And we are always in need of new members and volunteers. So, if you want to get rid of the doldrums, Make The Switch, drop in and join us. You’ll be glad you did!
