A single ATV crash on dirt path alongside Sunshine Boulevard in Lehigh Acres has left one 6-year-old dead. The crash occurred at approximately noon on Sunday, Oct. 22.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) incident report, the ATZ was traveling north on a dirt path alongside Sunshine Boulevard, north of 51st Street in Lehigh. The driver “failed to reduce speed for a sloped ditch,” according to the report.

The front of the ATV collided with the ditch, causing the child to become separated from the vehicle, the report stated. The 29-year-old ATV driver sustained minor injuries in the crash while the 6-year-old was transported to an area hospital and was later pronounced deceased. Neither of the Fort Myers residents were wearing a helmet, the report stated. The child’s next of kin have been notified.

FHP said the crash remains under investigation.
