VFW: Thank goodness!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Nov 16, 2023

On Saturday, November 11th at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres, we have a lot to be thankful for and there were many people who participated in sharing that feeling with us! Of course, the day did start off with a bit of a hitch when the Veterans Park location had no power, so our ceremony needed to be moved. The VFW at 25 S. Homestead is close by and became the place to go. The American Legion Post 323, also in Lehigh Acres, joined the VFW in hosting the event.

It was a good feeling seeing all the Veterans and many family members together and our post was united in thanking them for their service. Not only was there a flag ceremony with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by all in attendance, we had Boy Scouts, an ROTC unit, and a Rifle Unit. Unfortunately, because we were indoors, the Rifle Team didn’t get a chance to show off their skills, but the Boy Scouts performed their part admirably by carrying the flags of the respective Military Outfits. The Veterans from each outfit stood and sang the theme song from their service. It’s really exciting to watch the proceedings.

We have a big meeting coming up on Nov. 18. That will be our District Meeting, and the District Commander is a very active member of our post. There will be the main meeting, lunch, then the District Auxiliary will “borrow” a room from the church next door to hold their meeting. We are thankful that the church has proved again what a great neighbor they are to us.

Then, the biggest thanks of all will be Thursday, Nov. 23, when our post has a turkey dinner complete with all the fixings from noon until 6 p.m. Some of the best cooks in Lehigh Acres are members of our post and they volunteer all the time to help with meals. And our Auxiliary has worked to supplying some members with a meal in their homes.

Our Riders are planning a big event in the next few weeks while the Auxiliary and DAV will be making hearty plans to augment the upcoming holiday for many members of the community. There is always something happening at the VFW Post 4174 and we can be thankful for our Veterans wanting to continue serving and honoring the oath they undertook when they joined the military.

Stop by and see what we’re all about. You’ll be glad you did!
