VFW: It’s war!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Dec 7, 2023

This Saturday, Dec. 9, will be another one for the “history” books! Here at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres, our military people and even some of the families will convene to engage in the yearly contest between the Army and the Navy. For those of you not in the know, this is not a war fought with guns, but a very serious and dedicated football game!

Now, I have been asked by some of the members which team I would root for and I have to say, it’s a bit of a conundrum for me. My beloved dad was in the Navy while my adored husband was Army, so I tried never to take sides. Now, with both of them gone, I find myself in a similar situation as I am trying to serve a lunch to some of our members. Dare I say, I refuse to answer on the grounds, etc.

Not only are we honoring our Army and Navy branches, but at 25 S. Homestead Road, we have two boxes from the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign and are working hard to get these filled in time for delivery to Santa at the North Pole. Anyone with a few extra dollars is welcome to drop by and donate a toy or two. Walmart is having a great sale on all toys.

We’re having our annual Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 16, and our people are all excited about the snowball fight, among many other fun games. As long as the snowballs are made of styrofoam, I will happily participate, having no lost love for snow or the cold needed to manufacture it so it lands!

Because of the aforementioned Army, Navy game, Hillbilly Bingo will only be on the 23rd this month, and because of the holiday, breakfast will not be served the 24th or the 31st. There will also be no Show Me the money on the 25th or 31st. All our other normal activities will proceed as scheduled. Christmas Day, dinner will be served from noon with the Post closing at 6 p.m.

But, even with all these activities going on, we are still committed to taking care of our friends in need and will take care of them as we always do. And, we love the decorations inside which have the effect of putting everyone in a festive mood.

If you get a chance, drop in. You’ll be glad you did!
