Roadwatch update | Lee County Dec. 11

By Staff | Dec 11, 2023

1. Road Work/Maintenance/Improvement

US 41/Cleveland Avenue from Winkler Avenue to SR 82/Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: Crews will be installing and relocating utilities and constructing medians.

• Motorists should expect side road closures from Winkler Avenue to Victoria Avenue throughout the duration of the project.

• Motorists should expect intermittent northbound and southbound lane closures and detours on US 41/Cleveland Avenue during daytime and nighttime/overnight hours Monday through Friday throughout the duration of the project.

Additional work includes installing drainage structures, pedestrian signals, upgrading signals and lighting, and resurfacing existing highway. The project will be constructed in three segments. Each segment will have most of the construction completed prior to moving to the next segment. Crews will work on the west side of the road initially and when that work is completed, they will shift to the east side of Cleveland Avenue/US 41. The expected project completion is late 2023. For additional information, please contact Katelyn Carmona at katelyn.carmona@exp.com.

Corkscrew Road Widening Project – Phase I Construction Project: The project widens Corkscrew Road to six lanes from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Fire House Lane, and to four lanes from Fire House Lane to Bella Terra Boulevard. The project includes adding on-road bike lanes, some sidewalk, installing new drainage, and constructing a wildlife crossing approximately 1000 feet west of the entrance to Cypress Shadows Boulevard. This crossing will coincide with a regional flow-way that crosses Corkscrew Road at that location. The Village of Estero will be installing shared use paths, lighting, and landscaping as phasing allows. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone. Please be aware of shifts in travel lanes and bike lanes, sidewalk detours, miscellaneous turn lane closures, and uneven pavement throughout the project.

Please use caution and drive with courtesy and patience throughout the project area. Residents are entering and exiting communities on both sides of Corkscrew Road.

FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY, PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE ACTIVE WORK ZONE.

• The contractor continues to complete concrete work including curb and gravity wall. Motorists should expect concrete trucks entering and exiting the roadway.

• Construction of the wildlife crossing/bridge structure will conclude this week. Crews are expected to clean and demobilize over the next week to prepare for paving.

• Earthwork and sodding continue throughout the project. Motorists should be aware of construction equipment and vehicles operating close to the roadway.

• Crews are working to complete the connections for the updated traffic signals at Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Stoneybrook Golf Drive. Please be aware of workers near the roadway.

• Left turn lanes from Corkscrew Road are unavailable into Wild Blue Boulevard, Cypress Shadows Boulevard (The Preserve at Corkscrew), Midnight Blue Boulevard, and Bella Terra Boulevard. Left turns are still permitted, however they will be made from the travel lane. Where possible, barrels and other devices have been shifted to allow for as much room as possible for vehicles.

• The sidewalk on the south side of the road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Stoneybrook Golf Drive has been opened to pedestrians. Please be aware that some areas are a temporary surface. The Village of Estero is constructing the shared use path.

The work activities above are scheduled to occur, however unforeseen underground conditions and weather may affect this schedule.

WORK PERFORMED BY OTHERS:

• GL Homes is actively working in the RiverCreek Community site across from Wild Blue Boulevard. Motorists should expect delays and use caution as construction vehicles enter/exit the roadway.

• The Village of Estero is constructing the shared use path on the south side of the road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Stoneybrook Golf Drive. The Village is currently designing the path to extend to the east property line of Bella Terra and on the north side of the road to east of Grandezza.

MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO OBEY THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT. Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. Estimated completion is early 2024. Project cost is approximately $23M. The contractor is Cougar Contracting, LLC. For further questions, please visit the project website at http://corkscrewroadwidening.com or contact Jennifer Dorning by email at Jennifer.Dorning@atkinsrealis.com or by phone at (239) 338-7723.

Sanibel Causeway Emergency Restoration: As a part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Emergency Restoration of the Sanibel Causeway, crews continue work on McGregor Boulevard and the Sanibel Causeway from Port Comfort Road to Sanibel Island. The causeway islands surrounding the temporary roadway are an active work zone and are currently closed for public access, including from the water.

• From 7:00 PM on Friday, December 8, 2023 through 6:00 AM on Monday, December 11, 2023, motorists should expect ONE LANE OPEN to two-way travel during ALL HOURS. Flaggers are scheduled to assist drivers as crews work around the clock to restore the causeway bridge approaches. Motorists should plan for traffic delays and allow additional travel time on all weekends November and December.

• During the hours of 6:30 AM – 11:00 AM, motorists leaving Sanibel should expect eastbound McGregor Boulevard to be reduced to one lane from just east of the toll plaza to Port Comfort Road. This closed lane will be used as a dedicated lane for concrete delivery trucks arriving to the project. Concrete trucks will be escorted by FHP when using this lane. During this time, motorists traveling to Sanibel should expect FHP to intermittently stop traffic to allow concrete trucks to cross westbound travel lanes to reach the staging area.

• From Sunday, December 10, 2023 to Monday, December 11, 2023, motorists should expect lane closures during the nighttime/overnight hours of 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM from Port Comfort Road to east of the toll plaza for crews to pave the roadway.

• Beginning no earlier than 10:00 AM, motorists traveling westbound to Sanibel on McGregor Boulevard should expect segments of the outside through lane from Port Comfort Road to the toll plaza to be closed for crews to install guardrail.

• Beginning at 7:00 AM, motorists traveling westbound to Sanibel on McGregor Boulevard should expect segments of the turn lane to Punta Rassa to be closed to traffic for crews to install guardrail. Motorists can continue to turn right to Punta Rassa.

• Motorists should be aware that through December, portions of the travel lanes near the bridges on the Causeway will be narrowed to 10 feet with a one-foot shoulder and barrier wall on each side. Oversized loads will only be permitted during the nighttime/overnight hours with this restriction.

• Through the end of the year, motorists should expect isolated flagging operations, an uneven road surface, periodic shoulder closures, workers and equipment close to the road, and numerous dump trucks entering and exiting Punta Rassa to deliver project supplies.

Many oversized vehicles are crossing the causeway to assist with recovery efforts on the island. Please be patient as travel may be slower than usual. Bicyclists are encouraged to utilize another mode of transportation to travel the causeway and pedestrians are not permitted on the Sanibel Causeway. Expect shoulder closures throughout the project.

MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO OBEY THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 20 MPH. Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. For further questions, please contact Jennifer Dorning by email at Jennifer.Dorning@dot.state.fl.us or by phone at (239) 338-7723.
