Midwest Food Bank earns 4-star rating from Charity Navigator

By Staff | Dec 19, 2023

Midwest Food Bank’s strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Midwest Food Bank has earned this top distinction every year since 2013. Over 99¢ of every dollar donated to MFB goes to programs and services for the food insecure.

“We are delighted to provide Midwest Food Bank with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” according to Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that Midwest Food Bank can accomplish in the years ahead.”

This honor comes as food insecurity is rising and the demand for food has increased from the nonprofit partners served by MFB. Midwest Food Bank has been able to meet this challenge with the dedicated support of thousands of volunteers. In 2023, Midwest Food Bank is on track to have more than 30,000 individuals volunteer more than 350,000 hours of service, the equivalent of 175 paid staff members.

“Our Four-Star Charity Navigator shows that our supporters can trust our commitment to good governance and financial health,” said Karl Steidinger, executive director of Midwest Food Bank Florida. “This rating would not be possible without the blessing of volunteers and staff serving with excellence and integrity.”

Midwest Food Bank was founded in 2003 on the Kieser family farm in rural McLean County, Illinois. Partner nonprofit agencies receive food from MFB at no cost. MFB, the largest food bank in the U.S., has 10 domestic locations serving 23 states. There are also two international locations, East Africa and Haiti.
