Next week starts the New Year, and there will be many changes coming up all over the area. Some will be welcomed, some not so much. It seems the only thing we can ever be certain about is that nothing ever really stays the same. With that in mind, we need to get ready to brace ourselves and adapt with the times.

One of the changes the VFW will have to learn to deal with is the fact our ever popular National Magazine is going digital. Many of our vets aren’t happy with this. Since so many of them are in the group of elder vets, it would certainly make more sense for the organization to want to do everything possible to communicate and connect with them. Unfortunately, we are rapidly advancing to more technology every day.

Another change, but one with a more positive feel is that reports are now claiming more veterans are approving of the services they are receiving from the VA, including the department’s health care. The VFW is busy backing the Veterans 2nd Amendment Rights bill and is leading A Transition Assistance Bill to the House. The VA is also beginning to deploy Mobile Medical Units for the homeless Veterans.

With the approach of the New Year, the month of January’s meetings will focus on projects and ceremonies coming up. Also, more posts are joining in for the VFW’s Day of Service, offering continual assistance to military units comprising thousands of troops, honoring the fallen, remembering those who have honorably served and continue to do so every day, and is now making progress against predatory lawyers.

In Lehigh Acres, at the VFW Post 4174, which is located at 25 S. Homestead Road, we are committed to honoring our pledges to our veterans and their families, the community in which we reside and any of the other Posts in our district that may need our help. We not only respect and revere our Veterans, we also applaud our volunteers who help make our Little Post with the Big Heart a vital member of our community.
