VFW: V is for volunteer

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Jan 10, 2024

I’ll bet by now, the diet that was begun on the first with all good intentions has palled, right along with watching the re reruns of Friends, saying the dialogue to Gunsmoke along with James Arness or Miss Kitty, tackling the garage mess left over from grabbing the Christmas ornaments off the shelves, then trying to get them back on in the same order, replacing the plants which had to be moved to accommodate certain Xmas items and writing the thank you letter to Aunt Agatha, even though her gift wasn’t exactly what was hoped for!

January always begins with high hopes, definite plans for improving one’s life and wanting to do something far more exciting than just following the same old rut which has helped put those wrinkles on your face. Well, think about what you have to offer. It could be something as simple as folding things a specific way, cleaning out your closet with clothes that haven’t been worn since Nixon was president and donating them, baking a batch of cookies, or using your kitchen skills to help prepare a meal.

Here at the VFW, Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres, we are always on the lookout for volunteers, and those who answer the call, find their life enriched far more than they ever expected! While volunteers don’t get paid in money, they are rewarded by the feeling of accomplishment, thank you’s galore and a satisfaction in realizing there are more important things in life than the latest Reality show.

Entering the Little Post with the Big Heart, located at 25 S. Homestead Road, one will find so many different things happening that he or she will be hard put to decide where to volunteer first. We are involved in many community projects, different ways to honor our veterans, assist their families and yet still find time to have fun by hosting Bingo games, entertainment, raffles and many fine meals.

Once involved in volunteering, you might notice some pounds dropping off, new recipes to try in your own kitchen, make new friends, possibly win a neat raffle prize, learn some interesting historical facts from the many veterans inhabiting the Post, and lots more ideas to keep the interest exploding.

Come join us. You’ll be glad you did!
