VFW: Music alone

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Jan 18, 2024

While I was in grammar school, there was an old three part round song about all things perishing and music alone living which we sang often. It brings to my mind some very inspirational songs for which many of the members of the VFW, Post 4174 will immediately rise for and join in vocally!

The members of the U.S. Army have a song called The Army Goes Rolling Along while the Navy is known for Anchors Aweigh, the Air Force sings about the Wild Blue Yonder, our Coast Guard proudly claims Semper Paratus, which is Latin for Always Ready, the Marines are well noted for the Marine’s Hymn and of course, our National Anthem is The Star Spangled Banner. If we go back in history, there were many other popular songs sung by our marching heroes. One of the best known is When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again. But, each generation had special songs of their own which coincided with the particular events happening at that time.

Many times, the songs are sung in the individual artist’s rendition, and while it may not be as melodic as the original version, nevertheless, it will bring goose bumps or a burst of patriotism to the listeners. But, of all the military songs, the one sure to bring a reaction to everyone is Taps, especially when rendered by a former military bugler. There is seldom a dry eye when its haunting notes are sounded over the air.

Here at our Post 4174, while we do patronize our military songs on certain occasions, we also like to have continual music in our halls. We have a juke box complete with almost any song one can remember, but we are also enjoying listening to the many Karaoke singers which participate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sometimes there is a long line of people wanting to get up and perform for their fellow listeners. Many of the performers prefer the ballads from country music, while some of the singers will go back in time to the days of their youth, or to a special time in their life.

It doesn’t matter what kind of music is popular, it will always bring a reaction of some sort to all those in attendance wherever they are. Music alone can bring soothing sounds, raucous noise, feet tap dancing moves, precious memories of bygone days, a spring in one’s step as youth is revisited, the urge to get up and “cut a rug’ on the dance floor and just a general good feeling. Certain songs can bring warm memories of those who have gone before us. Music Alone Shall Live.

We are located at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres. Anytime you want to participate in our music festivities, come join us. You’ll be glad you did!
