Back in 1982, on NBC, a new show was born. It ran on until 1993 and had 275 episodes, which were written by James Burrows, Glen and Les Charles and remains one of the most popular series ever made. The location was supposedly a bar in Boston called Cheers , but the outside was really known as the Bull and Finch Club of Boston.

A former relief pitcher of the Boston Red Sox was its proprietor and most of the episodes humorously reflected on many of the current issues of the times. The theme song is Where Everybody Knows Your Name and is still very popular even today. The customers loved it because it gave them a sense of belonging and also bringing characters of different jobs and lifestyles together.

Being a member or patron of the VFW Post 4174, located at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, is a lot like the tv show. Our members are known by name, come in for companionship and definitely bring one a true sense of belonging. We welcome the general public to all our events, many which have a patriotic sense, but also which are being carried out for the betterment of our community.

We often ask Boy Scout Troops or the Junior ROTC to assist us in performing some of our patriotic rituals. We also enjoy watching the Drill Team do their parade walk and often the parents of these great students are given another chance to watch their children in action. The events always bring a feeling of pride and belonging to the participants.

Not only do we have monthly meetings for our different sections, we have happenings every single day of the week. Beginning with Sundays, there is our great breakfasts that are so reasonably priced, the soon to be over Football games and pools, Monday thru Friday we have lunch where Everyone is welcome, then Monday nights sponsor a Show Me The Money Bingo, Tuesday evenings is the members meeting nights, Wednesdays are for dinners and Karaoke, Thursday sees the regular Bingo, Friday is also a great dinner with more Karaoke, and Saturday you can enjoy a special dinner with entertainment.

In this day and age, people feel isolated from so many things anymore. The old sense of comradery is losing its standing and many of us want to find a way to bring back the old ways where we were more comfortable.
