VFW: Walk a mile

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Mar 13, 2024

From the time I learned to read, books have been a most important part of my life and I probably have one of the biggest home libraries of which anyone could claim to be the proud owner. Back in my teens, I had read a book, the name which escapes me right now (senior moments are an actual affliction!) and there was a particular phrase which has always stuck in my mind.

The main character was proclaiming his Indian friend always told him it was wise, before judging a man, to “Walk a mile in his moccasins.” Naturally, as a know it all teenager, even though the phrase had stuck, I didn’t pay attention to the saying very often and was, at many times, the one who might start an unpleasant nickname for someone because of some slight difference. Sometimes, being so smug, I was even downright cruel. Of course, today, I am deeply ashamed of my actions from my youth.

But, the longer I am a member of the VFW, Post 4174, I am learning just how wise that Indian was in his proclamation. And I have also learned that here, the members are not judged very harshly, because in order to be a member, one has had to walk a mile in another’s shoes (albeit boots). Having been in a war zone, one’s life undergoes many changes in thoughts, words and deeds. Seeing the horror and devastation that a war can invite, Veterans deserve the highest accolades and understanding for having survived the rigors.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we all are saints in our Post, but we do try and have tolerance for those who are still having trouble readjusting to a civilian life. We also try and assist the members of our community by supporting many various committees. Our doors are always open to the Public to join our different activities and meet and greet those who have actually walked that mile in combat boots.

We continually honor our Veterans and there are many ceremonies held during the year which would help the community get a better understanding of who we are and what we actually do. It’s not always fun, food and Bingo games. Our different departments are constantly volunteering to accomplish our yearly goals. We are asking you, the Public to “Walk a mile in our shoes” for a day in our Post. We are located 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres. You’ll be glad you did!
