VFW: Daily doings

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Apr 11, 2024

Seems like there’s always something happening at the VFW Post 4174, located at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres! This past Saturday, we had an awesome ceremony to commemorate the Welcome Home Viet Nam Veterans day, which is officially on March 29th. It was signed in by then President Trump in 2017 as a way to try and compensate the veterans from that war for the unhonorable way they were treated when they returned stateside.

We had the Jr. ROTC rifle team, the Boy Scouts and our own rifle team performing, a tear jerking speech from our District Commander, a heartfelt oration from our Post Commander , a poem rendition and the gun salute. Our attending veterans received a gold commemorative coin and the finale was played on a bugle, the song being of course, Taps. Right after the ceremony, a delicious pork roast dinner was served, free to our veterans.

While we didn’t have dinner on Easter Sunday, we did serve our delicious breakfast and closed the post early so our members could join their families and friends to celebrate the day. We are going to have all of our normal events, even though many of our members will be heading back north for the summer. While we definitely will miss them, the Monday night Show me the Money, the Tuesday meetings, the Wednesday dinners and entertainments, Thursday night Bingos and Friday dinners with their entertainments will continue.

This month, we will only have one Hillbilly Bingo because the fourth Saturday is our District Picnic in Bonita Springs and many of our members will be heading in that direction. Our Monday through Friday lunches will also continue and we have some interesting dinner menus coming up for your eating enjoyments.

Elections are being held for the upcoming season’s officers, plans are being made for a District meeting in May, the convention in June and of course, we are always fulfilling our obligations to our community. We are also working on ways to reconnect with members who have moved and also updating our phone numbers list. If you haven’t been getting any information about our Post and its doings, contact us because your information might just need to be updated!

If you have a few spare moments, join us Sunday through Saturday. You’ll be glad you did!
