VFW: Hold your horses

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | May 2, 2024

Saturday, May Fourth is a day to celebrate! If you’re a Star Wars fan, remember to “Let the Fourth Be With You”. If you haven’t seen all the Star Wars movies, that’s the day to park in front of the tv to view them! Should you prefer something a bit more distinguished, join us at the Little Post with a Big Heart in Lehigh Acres to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the fabulous Kentucky Derby.

VFW Post 4174 is planning on having some exciting horse races, several big raffles, a 50/50, admiring of fancy hats, lots of good will for everyone attending and a bodacious chicken dinner. It’s a fun event you won’t want to miss and we’re located at 25 S. Homestead Road. Starting time is 4 p.m. and at that time, the race is on! No need to hold your horses back by then!

The following Saturday will be a special chicken or steak shish-ka-bob dinner and as always, the public is welcome to join. Since all our meals are prepared for by volunteers, we are proud to claim some very good chefs. Each one has some sort of specialty or favorite recipe he/she will enjoy preparing for your pleasure. We start serving at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. There will also be entertainment and everyone is welcome to get up and “cut a rug” to a favorite tune.

The rest of the month, we will be having our usual” Show me the money” on Monday night at 6 p.m., Tuesdays are for our member’s meetings, Wednesday is a special dinner with entertainment that starts at 5 p.m., Thursday is Bingo beginning at 6 p.m. and Friday is another dinner evening with entertainment. For information on the Saturday Hillbilly Bingos, call the Post at 239-5100. The first Friday of every month is a fish and shrimp dinner while the 4th Friday is always a burger night, with fresh, patted burgers that beat Burger King’s any day.

Monday through Friday, we have lunches and every day there are several lunch specials. Our lunches are very reasonable, so give us a try. Also, our monthly meetings have so much information about our Post and its committee activities and anyone is welcome to show up as a guest to learn more about us and the many ways we serve our community.

Even though many of our members made the trek back north, we still have much going on, so don’t be bashful, come join us. You’ll be glad you did!
