VFW: Color coordinates

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Jul 3, 2024

Have you noticed at this time of the year, there are many different colors being sported by everyone you run into? It seems summer weather brings out the brightness to match the brilliance of the sunny days. If you look at your baseball players, their uniforms are light colors which show up so well on the field, especially during a night game.

Going to a football game in the fall, it seems thousands of people are wearing their favorite team’s colors, not just their jerseys, but sometimes even the paint on their faces! It’s amazing how devoted some fans are and they are so happy to be showing their support.

When the picture turns to winter, hockey fans are donning their idols jerseys, their gloves, even some hats and earmuffs. People are so proud to show off who they are rooting for and don’t care what anyone else might think of their choices. They will even argue for their team choice.

While I appreciate people love their sports, I can’t help wondering why there are not more devotees sponsoring RED Fridays. In case you are unaware, Red Fridays were established to help all Americans Remember Everyone Deployed. Our country has been in some manner of conflict for so many years, we needed a way to remind our citizens that a good deal of our population is being sent away to help protect freedom and democracy.

It seems we are becoming lax in remembering the really important things in life. While it’s fine to be a fan of a sports group and even fly its flag, it is far more important to remember that we have many of our citizens out of our safety zones, in a veritable harm’s way. Wearing red for them lets them know we are thinking and praying for their safe return home.

If you are heading for the VFW in Lehigh Acres on Fridays, you will see lots of our Veterans wearing a shade of red, but looking around the streets, not to many persons don the color and they don’t seem to realize they should be supporting those in our military. Surely, those people are far more deserving of our following than someone making millions to play a sport safely in the country.

Right now, our country is in the throes of a power struggle between Republicans and Democrats and we, as citizens, need to come together to let those in the running realize we are united in our love for our country and its fighters. If you don’t have a red shirt, come to 25 S. Homestead Road to the VFW Post 4174. We have some really awesome shirts on sale and you don’t have to be a member to purchase one. Show your patriotism by wearing RED on Friday. You’ll be glad you did!
