VFW: Still serving!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Jul 25, 2024

At the VFW Post 4174, located 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, we want to let the public know we are still serving, not just our Veterans, but our community as well. Along with all other VFW Posts all over the country, we feel that there is no better time to give back and are continually working to continue this very important mission.

Some of the ways in which we show our devotion to Veterans, their families and the community of which we are a part, are in our Community Outreach Programs, The Home for Children Project, Youth Activity, Veterans and Families Assistance, Scholarship Funds and the Media. We also feel it is important to teach Americanism to our youth, especially in these confusing, turbulent times.

Our Welcome Home Viet Nam Veterans was such an event which showed the honor we have in our members and regret they were never really accorded the thanks they deserved after that particular war. The ceremony was well conducted and parts of it brought the Veterans to their feet, standing with the pride they have over having successfully completed the job they were sent to do. Even after 50 years, those Veterans show they have a respect for the flag, their country and their fellow man.

Parts of the ceremony also brought tears to the eyes of many attending, especially with a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, sung as it is meant to be sung and not with the false choruses from a lot of the current musical entertainers. Also, the song Angel Flight and Taps can touch a chord in even the sternest heart. The entire audience all joined together to sing God Bess America and Kate Smith couldn’t have done it any better!

The Jr. ROTC and Boy Scouts of Troop 720 and the Rifle Team performed their parts with a dignity far beyond their ages and the applause for them was thunderous. There was an inspiring Honor Salute by the Honor Guard. The Veterans were treated to a meal afterwards and received small tokens of appreciation.

At our VFW, we are always looking for ways to continue helping our Veterans continue with their mission to continue still serving their country. We would also welcome the Public to our events. The phone number is 239-369-5100. Give us a call. You’ll be glad you did!
