VFW: Let’s get physical!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | Aug 7, 2024

With summer being here and the rainy season to boot, it is difficult to bring ourselves to go outside and try to do some physical exercise or even to do the yard work needed. Humidity is so high it takes our breath away and the sweat pours so fast we could almost use an umbrella! And we won’t even mention the dissipation of our favorite deodorant.

What would be the best way to overcome the heat, humidity and rain that abounds this time of the year. That’s an easy answer! Come join us at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres. It’s not just for the air conditioning , but for the many physical activities taking place inside. You don’t believe me? Have you ever been to a Show Me The Money on a Monday night and watched a winner jumping up and down? If that isn’t exercise, I don’t know what is!

We have lots of moving during the Hillbilly Bingo as a winner has to go up and claim the ticket which describes the meat prize. And it’s definitely a few steps to get the prize out of the refrigerator! Then, on Thursday night Bingo’s, watching people getting up to change their cards, run for a hot dog before the next game, and hollering, well, that definitely gives the old lungs a work out.

But, we are venturing out even further to accommodate those interested in becoming more active! We are starting a bowling league. Yes, that’s right, there is so much more activity in being a bowler, starting with the correct stances, then moving the arms just so, releasing the ball at the precise moment and walking off the lane. If this is something you think you might want to try, come in and put your name on a sign up sheet. This can only be lots of fun and great exercise.

Even better, bring your significant other to join with you and try your best to become the league champions. Since the post is air conditioned, you won’t need to bring extra deodorant or a change of shirts! This could be the answer to getting physical without having to worry about charley horses, stiff muscles or aching backs.

For more information, call the Post at 239-369-5100, or stop by at 25 S. Homestead Road anytime after 9 a.m Sunday through Saturday. You’ll be glad you did!
