VFW: Walk a mile
Every year in September, the Chicago Tribune would post a full page picture of the upcoming Indian Summer. The top half of the picture was a cornfield as is appears during the day and the bottom half was the same spot miraculously formed into a spiritual scene in the evening. It was always one of my favorite pictures because it made me feel there was something special in the world we might have to look for to be able to see. I still believe there is much good, but we have to work to find it every day.
Later on, while reading an article, I was impressed by the quote of an Indian sage who claimed it was not fair to judge someone unless and until you walked a mile in his moccasins. Those were some of the best words of wisdom ever uttered and to heed them would go a long way toward repairing many of the ills of the world today.
One place where the walk would be most respected and understood is here in Lehigh Acres at our VFW Post 4174. Every one of our veteran members have all walked far more than a mile, not in moccasins, but in “boondockers”. Not only did they hike many, many miles during boot camp, they wore those same boots all over the word, and many of the places they were in had to be a large part of some of the most horrible scenes ever imagined.
Being a member of the VFW can help a returning veteran readjust to civilian life because the members have all walked their own mile. They understand because they were there! Support for veterans is the most important mainstay of the organization and we are proud of our efforts to continue to improve on the ways and means we can best serve. We have 4 actual divisions within our Post; the Post itself, the Riders, the DAV and the Auxiliary. All four are dedicated to assisting our veterans to the best of our ability.
If anyone is interested in learning more about us, we can be visited daily at 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, or a phone call can also help with further information. The number is 239-369-5100. Our hours begin at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Sundays, we open a little earlier for a great breakfast.
The Public is always welcome. Walk in….You’ll be glad you did!
