VFW: Venerating veterans
Nov. 11 was a day to remember, for many different reasons. One is to thank all Veterans for their service, another is to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and also to remember the ones who are serving in countries other than ours. Many different ceremonies were held all over the country and attending one can definitely instill a spirit of patriotism in every heart.
In Lehigh Acres, our VFW Post and American Legion combined the observations at Veterans Park on Homestead Avenue. What is so special is the comradery shown by the two organizations. Often, there is a friendly rivalry between the two, not unlike that of the different branches of our military. But, on this special occasion, both posts and all the service branches stand together, united and anyone attending the formalities will find chills running up and down their spine!
If one was on Facebook for the last few days, it would be noticed that there are tons of thanks, many requests to pass on the flag of our great nation and also the reminder to wear poppies. Because of our Veterans, we are able to enjoy freedoms other nations can’t and we must remember to honor those who so nobly served.
After the impressive ceremonies, both posts had lunches which were heavily populated. There were also quite a few restaurants giving Veterans a free meal, all doing their part to show thanks to these stalwarts who had taken an oath when barely out of their teens to serve our country. Life was changed in so many ways for them during and after their deployment. Many of them have had trouble adjusting to civilian life again.
The VFW and American Legion were formed to continue honoring the duties performed by our military and also to help them relearn life as an ordinary citizen. The Posts have many programs and committees designed to assist a Veteran and his/her family upon completion of their enlistment. To find out more about how the VFW can help members, call 239-369-5100 or call 239-369-3178 for information on the American Legion.
Both organizations welcome new members as well as the public and are worth checking out. If you do, you’ll be glad you did!
