Viora Kathleen McDowell, 88, of Lehigh Acres, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013. She was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Blairsville, Pa., the daughter of Nola E. (St. Clair) and Raymond Kelly.
Known as "Kitty," she married Harry F. McDowell and was a stay-at-home mother to her son, Ronald, and daughter, Bonnie. In 1974, she and her family moved to Lehigh Acres from Silver Spring, Md.
She was an energetic person who always gave generously of her time and talents to causes she cared about. Foremost among her concerns were the issues faced by the military and veterans.
She became an active supporter of the American Legion, always working to advance its mission of caring for the nation's protectors.
She served as past president of the American Legion Auxiliary for the Lehigh Acres Post 323, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary for the State of Florida and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program, which provides intensive exposure to the political process and the need for public service to high school aged young women.
She is survived by her husband, Harry F. McDowell; son, Ronald E. McDowell; daughter, Bonnie B. McClung; several grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Fowler; extended family; several friends and others she worked with in the auxiliary; and the countless people she touched along life's journey.
A memorial gathering will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, in the chapel at Anderson-Patterson Cremation and Funeral Services, at 2701 Lee Blvd. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will provide a service with honors at 11 a.m.
