To the editor:
Half of all Medicare recipients have below $22,000 a year and half have savings less than $53,000. Medicare does a better job controlling cost than any private insurance. The cost of private insurance is projected to grow 50 percent faster than Medicare in the next decade. Private insurance administrative cost is 3 to 5 times higher than Medicare.
Medicare covers everyone. Private plans condition care on ability to pay. Medicare pays for preventative care, including annual wellness visits and screening exams.
The power of Medicare is unmatched by any insurance. Because of the new health care law, the Medical Trust is extended 8 years from 2016 to 2024. Medicare is stronger, not weaker.
Repeal of the ACA would eliminate all benefit improvements and Part A and Part B spending will increase. Repeal of the ACA will eliminate coverage in Part D "donut hole" and reinstate the cost sharing for preventive service.
Programs to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse will make our health care system stronger. Better communication, better record sharing will eliminate duplication and extra cost. There is also model of care delivery and care coordination to treat disease early and eliminate chronic disease care which plagues this inefficient system.
In short, we need to save Medicare and we need the ACA.
