Update: Name released; One person dead in officer-involved shooting

8 p.m. update:

Cape Coral Police Department detectives have released the name of the man who died during an armed confrontation with Cape Coral police officers around 2 a.m Monday morning.

Police identified Mark Alan Chernin, 43, of 2211 S.E. 15th Street, as the man confronted by police responding to a report of a man walking in southeast Cape Coral with a rifle.

The responding officers were not injured.

No other information was released.

One person is dead following an early-morning shooting involving Cape Coral police, who were responding to a report of a man walking in the southeast Cape with a rifle.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 2 a.m. after a caller reported an armed person walking in the 2200 block of S.E. 15 Street. A second call, a short time later, advised that shots had been fired, officials said.

“Cape Coral Police arrived on scene and made contact with the armed subject. Gunfire ensued, resulting in the death of the armed subject at the scene,” a release issued by the Cape Coral Police early this morning states.

The responding officers were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. Units will be in the neighborhood throughout the day as the crime scene is processed and evidence is gathered.

As per standard procedure, the involved officer or officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an administrative investigation.

No other details, including the name of the deceased or the officer or officers involved, have been released.

Additional information will be provided when it becomes available, officials said.
