To the editor:
I call it political thievery. The vote of the people clearly elected a Democratic president. It was quite a victory defeating Wall Street bankers, the outrageous Koch brothers' monetary influence, and most of all Karl Rove's millions of dollar's worth of negative commercials.
The vote defeated Citizens United and corporate money. So, since this is the truth that the voters won the election, why are all the congressmen still pandering to lobbyists on the losing side? Why are they voting against bills purely on party lines?
Obstructionist votes are hurting job creation. Why have they not closed state and federal tax loopholes? Part of the reason is that the House of Representatives has become obsessed with repealing the Affordable Healthcare Act (which Republicans call Obamacare).
The House cannot agree with the Senate on anything. They choose to construct their own bills, which contradict the Senate bills.
Now to discuss why the Senate is not passing bills. The simple reason is that they have invoked the filibuster rule over 450 times in this session. This practice prevents bills getting up or down votes. This is a serious misuse of the filibuster. Republicans kill legislation and block appointees with this abuse of the filibuster.
Voters are in a no win situation, even though they won the election. Now is the time for action - for the voting public to insist that their elected officials vote for the good of their district's constituents and not lobbyists or business interests. Money has to come out of politics. For those who run every two years, they spend too much time fund raising (selling their loyalty to large contributors). Now we have a lot of questions and no answers. Call your legislators and tell them to act for the people. Please call: U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney (941) 575-9101, U.S. Rep. Trey Radel (239) 573-5837.
