LRMC names 2013 Employee of the Year

Lehigh Regional Medical Center has named Margaret Evans as the 2013 Employee of the Year.

Evans was chosen from among 380 hospital employees for the honor.

Employees are nominated for the award by their peers based on their commitment to patient care, their professionalism and their contributions on the job.

Evans has worked for LRMC since 2010. She is the administrative assistant for Plant Operations.

Lee County releases March permit report

During March, contractors pulled 90 permits to build single-family houses valued at more than $18.3 million in unincorporated Lee County. That compares to 82 permits issued in February and 78 issued in March 2013, according to the Lee County Department of Community Development.

Also during March, 91 multi-family units were permitted, compared to 24 in February and eight in March 2013. These include a $4 million, 65-unit apartment building at 15251 Pamplona Run and a $2.5 million, six-unit condo building at 11051 Via Tuscany Lane.

Commercial activity was valued at nearly $1.5 million for nine permits. In comparison, commercial permits were valued at more than $5 million in February and nearly $2.2 million in March 2013.

Lee County Community Development issued 3,747 permits of all kinds during March.

Lehigh Community Services presented with donation check

Osman Gruhonjic, chief financial officer at Lehigh Regional and the new Lehigh Acres Honorary Mayor, recently presented a check for $3,424 to Rae Nicely, executive director of Lehigh Community Services.

It represented 25 percent of the funds raised by Gruhonjic during the Lehigh Acres Honorary mayor campaign that ended March 21.

The other beneficiaries of his campaign are the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce, which received almost $7,000, and The Lehigh Relay for Life, which will receive $3,424.

Lee County Solid Waste Department wins award

Lee County’s Composting Facility, which uses yard waste and biosolids to make OrganicLee compost, has received the 2014 Florida Water Environment Association’s Biosolids/Residuals Program Excellence Award in the Technology Innovation and Development category.

OrganicLee compost carries the U.S. composting Council Seal of Testing Assurance. The department generates more than 18,000 tons of the popular compost annually; it is marketed to farmers and gardeners throughout Southwest Florida.

The program was created by Lee County’s Solid Waste Department as another component of its integrated solid waste management program.

Open food managers certification class

A food managers certification class will be offered April 14 starting at 9 a.m. at the Lee County Parks and Recreation-UF/IFAS Lee County Extension, at 3410 Palm Beach Blvd. in Fort Myers.

The course is a comprehensive food-handler training that includes the current regulations to assist in taking the ServSafe Manager’s Exam, which is offered through the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

Following the class, the exam will be held at 2 p.m. The national certification is valid for five years.

The cost is $110 for the class and exam or $165 for the class, exam and textbook.

Register at least three business days before the class; no walk-in registrations will be permitted.

Property managers, developers, condo association members and real estate professionals can find free online training via Lee County’s website for improved knowledge of how to not violate the Fair Housing Act.

The site lets users make a request for training. Lee County Human Services staff will then set up the training.

Lee County’s site also contains resources on filing a complaint, question and answers on Fair Housing, the county’s Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing and other Fair Housing resources.

The Southwest Regional Manufacturers Association will host Made in SWFL on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Harborside Event Center, at 1375 Monroe St., Fort Myers.

The event is an opportunity to connect and network with local manufacturers. It will feature presentations from manufacturing leaders, a trade show and the presentation of the 2013 Manufacturer of the Year awards.

The agenda also includes workshops on tax topics such as foreign sales; R&D tax credits; tax savings for capital investment, purchases and renovations; and consulting and investing advice for closely held businesses. An educational section on grants will be offered.

Local STEM students can attend an interactive presentation from 9:30 a.m. to noon, with a reservation. From noon to 5 p.m., the public is invited to attend the showcase.

Admission is free with a business card, and $5 without.

Namaste Flow Yoga, at 904 Lee Blvd., Unit 104, is a new yoga studio. It will offer a free yoga class every Saturday in April.

The class is great for beginners. Students can come and find that it relieves stress, improves circulation, lubricants the joints, increases strength/endurance and eases pain.

LCEC is accepting applications from organizations for an environmental funding award.

The deadline for the 2014 applications is Sept. 1.

Organizations must meet certain criteria to be considered for the award including being located within LCEC service territory, funding utilized for projects/programs related to the environment and the utility industry and having a demonstrated need for funds.
